But when it came time to buy, parting with $119 at Big Five Sporting Goods for the Total Body Works 5000 seemed a better buy than the Total Gym Club 1700 for $349 at Sports Authority.

It is a cardio machine more than anything, but it does it’s job well. I’m well satisfied with this gym. The machine won’t replace the gym 100%, but if you are busy and don’t have the luxury of free time to go to the gym 6 days a week, this machine will do a good job. I was looking for a home gym for a long time, and in the end, it was between the Total Gym (endorsed by Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley) or the Gravity Force Trainer.

It’s left up to the user to develop a regimen. If you really want to get in shape or back in shape use this unit. Only complaint would be the sliding bench comes away from the rails when folding it up.

I love this gym! I raised the bed so I can slide the unit under it when not in use. My favorite part is the pullups.

My second problem was/is the ability to get an effective workout for anything other than my arms and back. Build quality is very good. I was initially looking at the Total gym, Total Trainer, and the Body Rail.

If they were round, and had easy to adjust, secure pins, they would be a winner. I went to Walmart to try the adjustable ones and they were very loose, they felt poorly made, and if you read the reviews there’s apparently a lot of complaints about them falling off. They allow quick weight changes for fast, intense workouts. I saw these and decided I would spend the money on these.

I used to spend an hour a day, four days a week in the gym doing the same basic stuff. The weights do rattle a little but are very sturdy in lifts. However, after working in retail for years, I know that customers treat store equipment like crap, and that probably explained the quality of the dumbbells on display. I’ve been using these to go with p90x for the last few days and they are great. I love my weights.

Unfortunately, Bowflex needs to spend a little more on manufacturing and a little less on marketing. I have been looking for something like this for years instead of the bulky weights that you have screw on and off every time you want to switch to lower/higher weights, or having 5 lb, 10 lb, 12 lb, 15 lb etc. The design of the Power Block is not as “sexy” but way more functional.
